Cabrini Green Legal Aid Clinic is a faith based non-profit providing legal aid services to low-income Chicagoans in family, housing, criminal records, and criminal defense law. This interior build-out of a new 6,000 s.f. office condo space helped accommodate CGLA’s move their offices to a new, central location.
A collaborative process with the client yielded a design that is a welcoming and comforting environment for clients, as well as has a sense professionalism and finish for funders and supporters. Translucent curved panels bring light deep into the space, and the open flow between offices allows for the CGLA community to interact and connect. Informal meeting areas, interior landscaping, floating ceiling elements and bright colors provide a vibrant “collegiate” backdrop for the activities of the staff. A flexible design strategy incorporates material donations from committed supporters, including furniture, wood panels, tile flooring, mill-work and plumbing fixtures. Natural light washing the space through the existing storefront windows is complimented by messaging window screens developed in collaboration with graphic designer Cliff Questel, which also help maintain confidentiality for the clients within.
The project was managed by Illinois Facilities Fund. Construction was completed in Fall 2008.
