Growing Home is a non-profit organization that provides job training and employment opportunities for homeless and low-income people within the context of an organic agriculture business. The design and master plan of the new Growing Home urban campus at 58th and Wood, in the Englewood neighborhood in Chicago, is a small but packed site of growing fields, hoop houses, greenhouses, classrooms and administrative spaces, as well as community amenities such as farm stands and CSA drop-offs. Design includes alternative energy sources and elements for participation by the community and overall flexibility. Construction of Phase 1 is complete. Construction of Phase 2 will be complete in Spring 2009 (Take a look at newly uploaded construction photographs!). Volunteer efforts and in-kind consulting donations from various organizations including Designs for Dignity, Yes to Carrots and Engineers Without Borders will help move the project further towards completion.
